Cyril Riley & the rise of Stumblin' In
6 months ago he didn't have a passport, now he's touring as a full-time signed artist with 14+ million monthly listeners.
The phrase ‘Overnight Success Story’ is misleading. An overnight sensation or viral moment, sure that happens, but what people publicly view as ‘overnight’ tends to actually be the accumulation of YEARS worth of practicing, failing, succeeding, and finally breaking through. Think about starting a podcast for example, supposedly most people stop after 3 episodes because the momentum runs dry when the effort-to-listener ratio is disheartening. That’s when your internal ambition + fulfillment needs to be enough.
Something Cyril Riley emphasizes is that he was already an ‘artist’ well before signing with [Spinnin’ Records] or gaining over 14,000,000 monthly Spotify listeners. Because he was making music and he was playing it, for 15 years, to crowds or clubs where people loved it. Then overnight he does go viral when his hit remix “Stumblin’ In” took off all over the globe. Next thing he’s on a plane touring, going to TikTok HQ, partnering with Grammy-nominated band Disturbed - all with a newborn & family cheering him on at home in Darwin, Australia.

This is Cyril’s first podcast and I feel extremely grateful that I could speak with him in this pivotal moment of his life. Six months ago he didn’t have a passport and now he’s touring Europe, playing massive half time shows, landing on the US Billboard charts with his ‘Sound Of Silence official remix’ and in the pages of Forbes.
One story he shares will have you amazed. Cyril details the absolute whirlwind night that saw his first baby being born AND the undeniable launch of his global-virality, take place in parallel.
Cyril is someone you want to see succeed because he is so damn passionate, kind, and authentically grateful to his listeners.
He knows the value of engaging with criticism and how to differentiate between ‘trolls’ or genuine music-lovers with feedback. Naturally, this isn’t an easy skill to develop and he explains how you can move from an emotional-reaction to curiosity upon receiving feedback.
It is a true gift to share this episode of Tall Poppy Talk.
